Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a complex branch of ancient Chinese Medicine that supports the concept that a subtle concept called ‘Qi or Chi’ circulates via meridians or energy channels through the body. Qi as the vital life force is what gives us life and when it is balanced and the flow is uninhibited, is essential to overall health.

When this vital life force energy is blocked, mis-directed, deficient or in excess, the imbalance of Qi may result in some type of dysfunction, pain or poor health. Stimulation of acupoints along the course of the meridians helps to restore normal balance and flow of Qi to stimulate natural healing and improve overall well-being.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are typically fine and flexible, no bigger around than a strand of human hair. It is normal to feel the initial insertion into an acupoint and when the needles make contact with the patient’s Qi. Most patients will feel a slight tingling sensation. Patients new to acupuncture are often amazed at just how comfortable they are during an acupuncture treatment.

Most people feel little to no pain. You may feel a mild sensation, warmth, or a slight tingling during the treatment, but many find it relaxing.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat:

  • Chronic pain (neck, shoulder, back)

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Stress, anxiety, and insomnia

  • Digestive issues

  • Women’s health concerns (PMS, fertility, menopause)

  • Allergies and sinus issues

Always consult with your practitioner to see how acupuncture can support your specific needs.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on your constitution, condition, it’s severity, and how your body responds. Each patient is unique and response to treatment and the number and frequency of treatments vary.

Many patients feel better after one session, while others may need a series of treatments to experience lasting results. Some patients respond very well to acupuncture only after a few sessions. Some patients may not improve until the 6th or 7th treatment. Others may require 1-2 treatments a week for several months for maximum results.

Acute conditions tend to require less treatment than chronic conditions.

For best results, acupuncture is recommended at least twice a week for a few weeks and up 3 months.

Sometimes, despite the acupuncturist’s best effort and skill, the patient does not respond to treatment.

What should I do before my appointment?

Eat a light meal or snack before your session, wear loose, comfortable clothing, and avoid caffeine or alcohol beforehand. Try to arrive a few minutes early to relax.

What should I expect after my session?

Most people feel calm and refreshed. Some may feel tired or notice mild soreness at needle sites. These are normal and typically go away quickly.
